The Special Committee was established in the Senate by S.Res. 102 in 1943, and was chaired by Senator Walter George of Georgia. In 1944, the House passed H.Res. 408, and the committee became a joint Congressional committee. The committee worked on issues such as demobilization and employment, reconversion of industry to peacetime pursuits, disposition of war surplus, and the overall return of the economy to pre-war footing. Among ideas discussed in the hearings were educational grants to veterans, housing programs for veterans, and urban renewal.
