The Public Works Department has a fascinating history. It was created in 1911 as an amalgamation of the Engineering, Streets, and Water Departments. In 1976, the water functions were spun off in the creation of the Boston Water and Sewer Commission. This section treats the Engineering as the predecessor of the Public Works Department. The other departments have their annual reports separate on this research guide.
The BPL does not hold the following volumes: 1912, 1916, and 1985/86.
