Internship Seekers' Guide

Tips and tricks for making the most of your internship

Tips for Success

Being a successful intern breaks down into three main factors. These apply to volunteer opportunities too!

  • Do Your Research.
Learn all you can about the organization and the industry.
    • Read professional literature. Find trade journals, magazines, industry blogs.
    • Explore professional associations. Professional organizations and organizations can give you access to literature as well as resources with moving forward with your career
  • Speak to Your Colleagues
Don't keep your head down or just speak with only interns. Your colleagues and supervisor are great resources.
    • Ask questions and for feedback. You are there to work but you are also there to learn. Feedback is especially important so you can learn where your strengths and weaknesses lie.
    • Find a mentor. Some professionals enjoy sharing their expertise and are willing to assist new folks entering the field. They can also explain to you potential career paths and give practical advice.
  • Treat Your Internship Like it is Your Real Job.
Give your supervisor good reasons to hire you fulltime. Give your colleagues good reasons to be great references for you.
    • Be prepared to do some grunt work. Remember there are menial tasks included in all jobs and pitching in and doing your share will establish better teamwork and goodwill among co-workers.
    • Be professional. Be on time and dress appropriately for the your workplace. Maintain a professional image by avoiding gossip and observing (don't participate in!) office politics.
