What is Desktop Publishing Software?

Desktop publishing software is used to make professional layouts for print and digital publishing. These applications focus on layout of content rather than heavy duty editing or illustration where Raster Graphics and Vector Editing applications excel.

InDesign and QuarkXPress are examples of two popular commercial Desktop Publishing applications. The BPL does not have QuarkXPress installed on its workstations.

You can use InDesign or other desktop publishing software to make:

Business cards
Brochures
eBooks
Newsletters
Magazines
Interactive pdf documents

Alternatives to InDesign

Canva
Canva is a free web based graphics editing tool where you can edit images and create flyers, posters, graphics and more. Users must sign up for an account. There is a premium option but a good portion of the content and options are available for free.
Microsoft Publisher
Part of Microsoft Office, MS Publisher is an entry-level program that places emphasis on layout, pictures and effects for professional looking products. MS Publisher 2013 is installed on public Windows workstations throughout the BPL system
Scribus
Open Source Desktop Publishing software supporting EPS and SVG import/export, and PDF formats.
