Black History Month

Introduction- the History of Black History Month

Black History Month was begun in 1926 by Carter Woodson as "Negro History Week." Woodson was the founder of what is now known as the Association of the Study of African American History.  Woodson felt that African American contributions to the history of the United States was being ignored in the study of American history overall and hoped that the efforts of his colleagues would change that.

This guide hopes to show you what one can find at the Boston Public Library (and a bit beyond) to assist in carrying out research in the study of the African American experience in America.
